I wanted to talk about something that is very personal. Choosing whether to talk about and share your diagnosis openly is a decision many of us have had to make or may need to make. It's important to note that there is no “right” decision here. One is not morally superior to the other or more valuable. It is entirely up to you.
This week we shared some possible reasons to share or not on our Instagram feed. If you face this choice, try not to let outside pressure influence your decision. Well-meaning family, friends, and even strangers will give you unsolicited advice. But this is your journey, and you get to call the shots. You don't owe anybody anything. And you don't even need a reason.
During my treatment for breast cancer five years ago, I chose only to share what was going on with a few close friends and family. I was not a public Cancer Warrior, though I love that others choose that path. My decision was the "right" one for me and my family. We got through it together, with little fanfare. Just the way I wanted it.
